Assessment 4: Individual Report - 15%

Q1 Think about your pre-trip learning objectives.
Have you achieved what you set out to learn and discover? If so, to what extent? If not, why?
What factors have helped you achieve your objectives?
What hindrances did you face and how did you overcome them?

Q2 Think of what you have learnt.
Share the lessons you have learnt. Provide concrete details of experiences, dialogues, events.

Q3 Review the inquiry questions you framed.
Have you found the answers? What have you found out?

Q4 Assess yourself on your global skills.
How have you improved? How has your understanding of cross-cultural issues developed?

1. I have achieved what I set on my pre-learning objective to a large extent. As 6 weeks living in China, Wuhan, I had adapted to their living conditions, the food they eat here and their culture. Thus by adapting to their environment here, then could I easily learned more of the things I set in my learning plan. What I set for my learning plan were, what kind of food they eat, their attitude and they way they do things.
Let me begin with the food they eat, I realized that the locals here likes their food to be spicy and oily. They loves to eat deep fried food and with chili powder on it. At one time I observe how they cook their food. Usually in Singapore whenever the fried the vegetable, they will pour some oil onto the pan first then fry some garlic before putting the vegetables in, whereas here, they DEEP FRIED the vegetable for awhile first, then they will pour away the excess oil and fry the vegetable again with spice on it. Well I realized many local always asked for more chili sauce or chili power.
Next was their attitude, the Chinese are among the most hospitable people in the world. However, in smaller cities with less foreign exposure, many will freeze up the first time you try to communicate. No worries: once locals get used to you, you will find them extremely accommodating. Just like in Wuhan, if they does not know you are a foreigner they will not treat you as friendly as you are. During my journey here, before i say anything, while approaching to the shop owner, they will always give me an unfriendly face, but when they know i am from Singapore, their attitude towards us had a 180 degree change. Well maybe they really like to communicate with foreigner.
Lastly is how the way they handle things, i observe that the Chinese are very impatient, as they like to get things done fast, if not they will start to grumble. I still remember when we were at the Yellow Crank Tower queuing to enter, there is a China man behind me queuing with me as well. Then when is my turn to enter the tower, i accidentally dropped my ticket. When i went to pick it up my ticket, the china man behind me just walk passed me and proceed to the tower, i was being pushed by him too. Well can’t he be more patient and polite?
Some obstacle that i face was the food here. Although the food here tastes good and yummy, the amount of oil and salt was really more than what i expected. As the locals here like their food to be spicy, i get to fall sick easily due to the heaty ness in my body. In order to prevent getting fever, sore throats or flu, i force myself to drink lots of water every day.

2. I have learned many things in this trip. The things that i had experience here is totally different from Singapore, the environment, culture, mindset and many more. Through this 6 weeks, i realised that my Chinese has improve, at first i had difficulties in communicating with the locals here, as times goes by, communicating with them is really an easy task now. Learning to socialise in China really was challenge to me, well now that i have already learned, i will strike even further goal, like translate to those who are not Chinese.
I also learned their culture and belief. Wuhan is home to a number of comparatively large places of religious worship serving followers of Buddhism, Taoism, Islam, Catholicism and Protestant Christianity. The Zenism College of Central South China is the sole institute of religious higher education in the Wuhan region.

3. These are the questions I framed-How they react to problems?
How do they communicate with one another?
Are their determination really is that strong?
What type of environment they had.
Should you work in China?

-How does the local react to problems- what i realised was that, whenever they encountered a problem, they always, explained the problem first before taking action, whereas we Singaporean always take action to solve the problem first before explaining what’s going on.

- How do they communicate with one another- I observed that they speak loudly to each other, especially on the phone. Their voice volume is as loud as shouting and they don’t mind others listening to their conversation, whereas in Singapore it is considered very rude.
As for business, they like to pull their customer in and promote loudly. They were like desperate to sell their goods off. Compared to Singapore sale promoter, they will let their customer have a look product first, before promoting their product.

-Are their determination really is that strong- Well I can’t really get any answer in this trip, maybe doesn’t really have any interaction with the locals here, what I did most was just observing them. However, I heard many news of the Chinese determination is stronger than the western; well I didn’t get a chance to witness it in this trip.

-What type of environment they had- In this trip, I realized that their air was quite polluted compare to Singapore. As sewage and rubbish treatment facilities were poorly done. Whenever after they had their meals, they just throw away their used paper bowl and waste on the floor, you hardly see them disposing their waste into a rubbish bin. And their cleanness here was very poor. In Singapore, if you were caught littering, you will be fined. In China, no one will catch you for littering, it is common here. As a result, the air here was not as fresh, as dusts and dirt were emitted from the vehicle’s exhaust and the waste created by the locals.

-Should you work in China?- Well, the expense here was really cheap, especially the food here, filling up your stomach here shouldn’t be a problem here. As we know China markets are growing rapidly and more and more investor are coming in to China to make investment. I believe that China is the 21st century rising star. Thus doing business in China, really is a good opportunity.

4. Just to recap on my global skill, first was communication, second was business in China and last was the trust in the people here. My global skill has really improved through this 6 weeks trip in Wuhan.
For communication in Wuhan, they quite advance compare to other provinces. For the basic communication tools, telephone and handphone, most of the people here does have one. And for internet, they have QQ-online massagers online, which is our so call MSN messagers online.
For business, I learnt lots of things from my IS lecture, business etiquette. This lecture really teaches me lots of business stuff. I had learned the different behaviors of a business man and some psychological skill as well. It was really interesting as it involve lots of social skill. As we know China markets is growing rapidly and more and more investor came to China to invest, thus by having some knowledge of business etiquette here really helps me a lot if I am coming here to work in future.
And for the trust in people, I didn’t gain much in this trip, maybe I need more time for observation. However, what I conclude is that, both parties must have benefits then can you gain the trust of that person.
As a conclusion, I truly understand the cross cultural issues between both country Singapore and China. China has lots of areas that needs to improve such like, their bad habits- not keeping the environment clean and the traffics on the roads. In addition, China also needs to improve in political stuff, there are still quite a number of corruption occurs unlike Singapore. However Singapore can learn some ideals from China so as to have more improvement, such as, using natural resources to generate electricity. And also Singaporean should learn from china’s innovations, as the Chinese creativity is going to surpass the western.
This trip really benefits me a lot as I have learnt how to be independent and also being able to complete 2 modules in 6 weeks can really save my time when the next semester starts. Thus I would be able to spend more time on other modules and score better grades.

Today was another shopping day, we went to Yellow Crank Tower. Woke up at 9 am, meet up with Ernest, Jit Siong and the rest for breakfast. After our meal, we hire a van to our destination. During the journey to there, we encountered a problem. As we were about to reach our destination, we through a small pavement near the main road, by right is no entry for vehicle; however our driver wanted to take the short cut. Then suddenly there is a car in front of us, going the opposite direction against us. We were caught into a jam and many cars were behind us.
Then conflict began to rise. Our driver gets off the car and scolds that driver that block our way. Both of them keep quarrying and us sitting in the van patiently waiting for the best. Then suddenly our driver burst in anger and took out a huge screw driver and started whacking the person arm. Luckily some of the public quickly separate these two men, if not i think blood may starts to spill out. After our driver has settled with him, he apologises to us and asks us to take a cab to our destination. He told us not to pay him any money; however we pay him half of the price.
Well, our shopping trip still has to continue, we took a cab to the Yellow Crank Tower for shopping. At there, i bought some shirts and bags for my family. We shopped several shopping malls, and saw many things that we like. My friend Jit Siong bought the most stuff. He bought a bag, a wallet and many clothes.
After shopping we decided to go back to our campus, but before we go back, we ate Dang Bao(soup bun) again! haha. The delicious Dang Bao that we can’t find in Singapore, i think i will miss Dang Bao.
At night we went out the campus for dinner. We also went to the shopping mall next to the KFC. At there i bought a PLAYBOY T-shirt and head back to our dorm for rest. The day just ended and 3 more days to go...
REFLECTION
I would like to reflect on the thing we encounter during the trip to the Yellow Crank Tower. What causes the two drivers to quarrel? Is it really the reason was he bang on to our driver’s car? Well i personally felt that is the Road system here was causes the problem. The locals here don’t obeys traffic rules at all, they just anyhow turn whenever they want it to. They can even drive in opposite direction lane too. Thus for today’s scenario, the driver went into opposite direction and causes traffic problems. I think the traffic system here should really be more like Singapore, and Singapore is of the most well organize road system in the world.

This is the driver that cause the jam.

We stuck here for like 15mins...
BRAWL!
Well... still Dang Bao is the BEST!

Today was another shopping day, we went to two places to shop today. First we went back to the IT mall once again. This time I bought a MP4 for my uncle. We went back to the same shop that we last bought our MP4.
After buying the MP4 for my uncle, we decided to go Han Kou for shopping; we took a cab to there. At there, we first shop at the mesterbrown, my friend Cris wanted to buy some jackets for his relative. At basement 1, i saw a cute hand carry bag, red with blue in colour. Then i decided to buy one for my mum, as she likes young cute stuff, so i think this bag really suits my mum, haha.
Next we went further down for more shopping, then Dave called us, telling us that they are here too. So we meet up with Dave group and shopped together. We went to the ATM shop to buy some clothes and shoes. In the shop we saw a shop selling 3D image photo, it was really cool and we got attracted to it. I bought a picture of two panda, the reason why choose the panda picture was, panda represent China, thus it will remind me on this China Wuhan trip.
After the ATM, i saw a shop that sells leather wallet, without any hesitation, i ask everyone to wait for me and proceed to the shop. The shop name is PENGUIN, it is a Hong Kong brand name, what i know is that, their leather quality is good, thus i decide to buy one leather wallet for my Dad.
At around 5 pm, we took a cab and went back to our campus for dinner. At night i did my journal and IS report and also talk to my mum through webcam. After that, went to bed and lights off zzz...
REFLECTION
I would like to reflect on the experience i had during today’s shopping. i realized that the sales man here were very aggressive in promoting their product. Whenever a customer came in, surely there is an assistant entertaining their customers. If found out that there were many sales man or sales girl in a shop. Thus fill with curiosity, i ask a sale man how’s their pay like. I was shocked after listening the answer. Their pay is 3 Yuan per hour and no commission is included. Wow, in Singapore, working in MacDonald the lowest pay they offer you is at least 3 50 SING DOLLARS! This shows that their labour here were damm cheap. Come on 3 Yuan is like less than a sing dollar!?

Hankou here i COME AGAIN!

Shopping...

Today in the morning i did some of my IS report stuff and some touch up on my mini project. As today at 3pm is my mini project interview. Then at around 1 pm, we went out for lunch at canteen 2.
After lunch, i accompany my friends for the interview as their interview was 2 pm onwards. First was Ernest, second was Jit Siong, third was Jia Hui and following up next was me. When is my turn, i felt excited and nervous, however when i am up there, i confidently present my mini project to Mr Ma. Overall, Mr Ma said my project was good, haha, glad to hear Mr Ma said that.
After the interview, we went back to the dorm to continue doing our IS Group report. Then at around 7 pm, we went out the campus for dinner. We went to a street that sells food. Those foods there were oily and spicy, but i like it, very yummy. I ate 5 grilled squids and a bowl of fried noodles.
After dinner we went to some shops near our campus and head back to our dorm for some rest...
REFLECTION
I would like to reflect the things i saw during dinner. We were looking for seats for our meal. Then we spotted a table that was available, however the tables were full of paper cups and bowls. Then a food seller there sees our problem, then without any hesitation, he just picks up those rubbishes on the table and threw it to the pavement along the road. When i saw that, i was like wow, if you do that in Singapore u will be fined heavily. That’s why Singapore cleanness is one of the cleanest in the world.

Food food food... oily stuff...

Nothing much for today, except work. Woke up at 10am, did some of my mini project and went for lunch at canteen 2. Then after lunch went back to dorm to do our IS assignment. At around 4 30 pm evening, we went to the club house to play table tennis and have some exercise there. It was really fun play table tennis, as China table tennis is the best in the world, thus playing table tennis in the champion country really makes me feel proud and cool.
At round 7 pm we went out for dinner, we ate our dinner at the streets outside our school. The food there were oily and YUMMY too, haha. It was really tasty; i ate grilled Song Tong and mushroom chicken fried noodle with egg.
After our dinner, we went to some shop to buy gift for our friends in Singapore. Then at 9 30 pm we went for a briefing from Mr Chua and Mr Ma. The briefing was about submitting our meal cards and hand in our IS assignment. After the briefing we head back to our dorm for rest and prepare for tomorrow interview.
REFLECTION
What i would like to reflect for today was, during briefing Mr Chua said “When it is nearer to go back to Singapore, you have to pay more attention to health.” Mr Chua said this, because we are leaving Wuhan soon and he wouldn’t like any of us get sick or ill, he want everyone to ok and go back to Singapore in good shape.
I can see that Mr Chua and Mr Ma were really concern for us especially our health conditions. Just like we my friend Shu Gen gets sick, Mr Chua every day SMS me whether is he alright, is he getting better? I would like to thanks you for being so fatherly and caring for us, thanks Mr Chua and Mr Ma.

Today was the most fun day in this trip so far, we went for games and activity held just next to our school. We joined the MDE students for this activity. While waiting for the MDE students to arrived, we play some warm up games. The warm up game was fun as there were forfeits to play. The forfeits were singing and dancing.
At around 8 30 am those MDE students finally arrived, immediately we were form into 4 groups. We were asked to design our group flag and compose our group cheer. Well Mark was our group leader and he was the one who draw the flag. And our group name was ‘TEAMERS’.
After creating our group, our next was constructing a human tank wheel by just using news paper. We were certainly having a hard time to figure out how can the whole group fits in. Then one of our group came out an idea of folding the papers together and as we move, only one person will give the commands. When we approached the finish line, our ‘track’ broke off and we had to manually fix it on the spot and complete the race. We managed to complete first with almost our entire track intact. Haha good jobs guys.
At around noon, we stopped for lunch break. We went lunch together with the MDE students. We introduce them the famous fish balls near our school. Mr Chua offered us money to treat them fish ball, however we did not accept, because it is not nice to take Mr Chua money, but thanks anyway.
After lunch, the MDE student wanted to visit our dorm, as they want to make a comparison. The moment they entered to our, the first word came out from their mouth was ‘WOW!!!’ They said our dorm was 10 times better than theirs. I was had the impression that their hostel is better than ours.
At around 2 pm, we continued with our high elements activity, after starting off with a small activity. The high element was really chicken fit, it was not really that high. I just climbed up the ladder and jumped down by closing my eyes. The height for this high element was just 3 stories high.
The next activity was the confidence fall, which a person had to fall from the back and the rest of the students had to hold and support he/she at the bottom. It was not that exciting compared to the previous one but it was also a nice game which needs a lot of teamwork too. This activity really shows us what true meaning of teamwork is.
Next was the last activity for the day, it was rock climbing. At first i felt so tired after participate so much activity already. However, when i saw my friends were climbing up there, and me just sitting down cheering for them, it really temps me to climb, thus without any hesitation, i decided to give it a shot. It was hard to hold on to the rocks as my hand and legs are long enough, hardly reach anything. As a result i could only climbed half of the length.
Then at around 6 pm, is time to say good bye to our instructor and those MDE students, before we left, we took a few pictures with the MDE students and give them our best wishes, as they were leaving on the Sunday.
At night, we out the campus for dinner and had a briefing from Mr Chua and Mr Ma. Then we head back to rooms to have good rest.
REFLECTION
During the briefing, Mr Chua commented that our discipline for today was pretty bad, firstly we were late for today activity and some of us just walked off before the activity ends. Mr Chua was disappointed with us, as usually we were always well discipline, however today we were abit roundly and totally just forgot our responsibility.
Well, i must admit that we were abit off today, we really disappoint Mr Chua. I hope that we will not repeat this mistake again...

6/04/09
Today i woke up at 9 am and went for the morning remainder class, with Cris and Ben. The lesson was actually optional, however i still insist of going, because i didn’t did well in my first test.
The class was conduct by Mr Chua as Mr Ma was not back yet. Mr Chua go through topics 5, 6 and 7 and explain to us those important points. Then at around 12 pm, we went lunch with Mr Chua at canteen 2. Mr Chua ask us, is canteen 2 fried rice nice? And we replied, “YES!” So everyone ordered fried rice for lunch.
After lunch we went for 2pm lesson, Mr Chua go through Feb 2009 paper. This was the last revision before we take our final test on Wednesday. Mr Chua was very seriously as he teach. I can see that he really want us to score.
After lesson we went canteen 3 for dinner, i ate many fried oily stuff there, haha, can’t resistance it. Noting much today, after dinner i stay in the dorm and did my revision and projects. Well 1 more week to go.
REFLECTION
During the morning remainder, Mr Chua taught us some study tactics and methods. He said, by doing papers and referring to answer at same time, is not a good way to study; instead it will only defeat the purpose of letting us self-studying. Mr Chua was a experience learner, he really taught us many tactics on studying.
He also share with us that, during his youth when he is at the hostile, what he actually did was, he wrote many formula on a piece of paper and paste it on his window, everyday one formula one paper was pasted on it. And every day before he went for classes he will took a min to look through those formulas pasted on this window.
Mr Chua was really a good role model to follow, i learned many things from him, and i am very grateful to have him in this trip.
